Every child is unique and learns in a different way. The visual arts provide a practical learning tool to reach children and communicate essential understanding. We live in a visual culture that demands an education in the arts to help students take in, interpret, and comprehend the world they live in. Art is a universal tool for transmitting information and permeates throughout every other discipline. I believe that art is requisite to learning, interpreting, and understanding the world. The art classroom should be a stimulating and safe environment where students feel able to express themselves, make mistakes and learn from them, deal with meaningful, real world issues and big ideas, and be inspired to develop an idea and carry it to fruition. In the visual arts, every perspective and opinion is valid and should be taken into consideration. This mentality builds self-esteem and an open-minded outlook in the students. There is not always a straight answer or definite solution to problems posed and art allows students to explore other possibilities. Instead of being told what is right and what is wrong, students will deal with hands on experiences, and learn by trial and error the most effective way to accomplish their goal, so that they employ creative problem solving to fully understand the concept of what works effectively. Through this approach, students are able to take ownership of their education. I believe in teaching multidisciplinary curriculum with text, images, modern technology, hands on experiences, and an exploration of cultures. My experience and involvement in the arts has endowed me with many fundamental traits that have carried me thus far in my life. Art has taught me to absorb the world around me, interpret it, express my ideas, convey my point of view, stand by my ideals, and to reflect on my processes. Art has taught me to develop an idea, self-reflect, and grow from each creative experience. Art is a continuous learning experience that is constantly evolving with time and absorbing the beliefs, technologies, and culture of life. Art depicts our societies past, present, and future, and I believe that art provides the creative, critical thinking, and visionary innovation that the future demands.
